Over Optimization Update- Google what are you up to?
Over the last few weeks Google has been trying to roll out an update designed to bring more quality sites to the front and push back those that have poor quality and were ranking due to over optimization of their sites. Even with the all the struggles Google faces daily they still had the reputation for having the best search results of any search engine largely due to the fact that their ranking algorithm seemed fairly accurate. While it is true that some sites were able to game the system and get ranked, a manual review typically took care of any pretenders after some time.
It is no secret that Google makes it’s money from paid search so for those of us that can see it, there is a HUGE conflict of interest between webmasters, search engine marketers and Google. Let us make it clear that for any given keyword there are usually on 10 spots on the 1st page available. These 10 spots are considered prime real estate and can make a HUGE impact on your business and in fact be the only method of advertising some webmasters rely on.
On the other hand Google generally makes little to nothing on a site ranking on page 1 organically, instead they would prefer if you would participate in their Pay Per Click program where they can charge you anywhere from $1 to $50+ per click depending on your keyword!
This latest algo update is supposed to help put sites where they deserve to be and push others out that have gamed the system. Some people think this is just a ploy to force those who rely on search engine marketing to spend more on advertising dollars. What is the truth? I am not sure but lets take a look at a result.
The keyword “Make Money Online” has roughly 50,000 “exact match” searches per month in the United States, it also has over 100,000 “exact match” searches per month globally according to the Google Keyword Tool. Depending on where you are positioned it is estimated that the top 2 results for any keyword gets between 30-60% of the click through for the search term.
Trying to be objective and conservative I am going to use the 30% figure, so the top 2 sites can reasonably expect 15,000 visits from US visitors every single month. Depending on how a site is monetized (selling an e book, a training course, Adsense, Amazon, e commerce) the site can make a few hundred dollars every day or more! Pretty valuable keyword right?
Well lets take a Gander at the Page 1 results shall we?
As we can see the #2 site is called make money for beginners and it is part of a Google owned Blog network called Blogspot. The site is not even hosted on it’s own domain and is ranking in a very good spot for a very profitable keyword.
Lets not jump the gun here, just because it is hosted on blogspot does not mean there is not good content on it right?
Ladies and Gentlemen, here you have it. The page has exactly ZERO posts, ZERO images, ZERO videos and simply ONE word on the page, MAKE.
It warms my heart to see such a compelling website ranking for such a powerful keyword. It also warms my heart to know that the Google team is really working hard to make sure I the consumer has the most relevant, useful and informative site available to me when I search. I am also encouraged as a business owner now that I know Google does indeed rank such wonderful and majestic sites.
Folks wake up, Google can only get away with this if WE allow them to. While they make their money on Pay Per Click Advertising, if you and I simply STOP using Google they will lose ad revenue, they will lose people who use their flawed search engine, they will lose advertisers as a result.
What made Google the best a few years ago was the fact that the Search Engine would return the most relevant results, now many of the only relevant results are paid ads, should you click those Google gets paid, which is all they wanted in the 1st place.
I will keep watching from afar to see how this all shakes down, for now I will see you at BING!
